Tony's Approach: Wedding Photography

Julie here. I'd like to take a few moments to share my perception of Dad's work and his approach to photography. After all, I've known him all my life and have been working with him for years - who better to give you some perspective on how he works?

Is wedding photography an art? Dad and I have discussed this topic quite a bit. And yes, we do think of ourselves as artists. Years of experience in the photography business, an eye for stunning composition, and technical abilities that surpass those of any other photographer I've seen all lend themselves to Dad's gorgeous images. So yes, his wedding photographs are absolutely art - art that features a couple looking their most beautiful on their special day.

But sometimes this concept can be taken to the extreme - when a photographer's desire to create art surpasses the desire to please clients. Believe it or not we've heard multiple stories of clients requesting special shots during the reception (for example, that shot with Aunt Susan before she has to leave) and photographers who have simply refused, saying that they will only shoot photo-journalistic images at the reception. We've also heard stories of photographers who have become impatient during group photo sessions, and who have even yelled at guests. Ridiculous, right?

When Dad shoots a wedding, it's not all about him and the art he's creating. It's about the two of you, your loved ones and the elements of your day that are most important to you personally. He'll take those last minute group shots without hesitation. He'll make people laugh and he's both efficient and patient when it comes to those group shots that so many wedding photographers dread.

In fact, if you look at collections of his images, I think one of the things you'll notice is that most of them feature people. People laughing, people kissing, posing, dancing - but people more than inanimate objects. This is because he's so great with people - he's able to make them feel at ease to capture their true essence.

The bottom line is that, yes, wedding photography is an art. But it's also a service. Some might say there is a fine line between getting artistic images and being accommodating. This isn't the case with Dad because capturing people just comes naturally to him, as does the ability to capture beautiful, artistic images.

When all is said and done, more often than not, Dad's couples feel like he's part of the family. He's there for you, your own personal paparazzi, to capture memories the way that you want them captured.
